1 Killed in Fruit Truck Crash, Fire on NJ Turnpike: Source
A fruit truck was ablaze on the New Jersey Turnpike on Sunday evening, sending black smoke across the sky.
Video and photos from the scene showed the truck completely consumed by flames near Exit 12 in Carteret.
The driver of the truck was killed, a source tells NBC 4 New York.
The tractor-trailer crashed at about 6:30 p.m. and then caught fire, New Jersey state police said on Twitter.
The refrigerated fruit truck crashed with another vehicle, then plunged from the overpass above onto the ground below, the Carteret Fire Department said. Fire officials say it was totally consumed with flames by the time they arrived.
Troopers warned of delays and said there were closures due to the investigation. The road had reopened by 11 p.m.
