Top 5 shows of the weekend
Greetings and welcome to the first “Top 5 shows of the weekend” of 2018! It has been a slow start to the year, but that’s about to change for the better. We’ve been looking forward to a couple of these ones in particular for quite some time and it’s not supposed to get below freezing the next few days, everything’s coming up Milhouse.
5) Krallice, Pyrrhon, Thaetas, Aeviterne at Brooklyn Bazaar
Local favourites Krallice reached #2 on Coleman’s Best New York Metal Albums of 2017 list with Go Be Forgotten, and deservedly so, which he described as:
A blushless, full-blooded return to the Krallice of yore. Far more than a simple nostalgia trip, however, Go Be Forgotten—a violet wash of synth swells in the eye of a swirling extra-terrestrial tremolo-storm—is the relentlessly experimental quartet’s most focused, melodic, and listenable (there, I said it) record since Years Past Matter, begging listeners to step out from behind the lab glass and finally, after years of careful observation, face the gale head on.
It’s a pretty stacked show and you should definitely not miss Pyrrhon either, and if you like being ahead of the curve, then this is Aeviterne‘s debut show. Thursday 8pm
4) Snail Mail, Lomelda, Fits at Brooklyn Bazaar
I saw Baltimore’s Snail Mail last year opening for Waxahatchee at Warsaw and was instantly won over, The Slug in particular was one of the best songs I heard last year (it’s on 2016’s Habit EP). This show is sold out, which strikes me as quite remarkable for a band that isn’t local and haven’t released a full record yet. With a fairly extensive tour for the first quarter of the year, and even a couple of dates with Belle and Sebastian in the summer, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see them selling out somewhere even larger next time around. Friday 8pm
3) Fruit & Flowers, Dances, Sic Tic, Lola Pistola at Rough Trade
Fruit & Flowers released their debut EP, Drug Tax, last summer on Little Dickman Records and it’s well worth your time if it flew under your radar. The quartet perhaps sound a little more West Coast than New York but we could all use a little extra sunshine, especially after the last few weeks! Lola Pistola‘s Curfew album from last year was a delightful mix of skuzzy rockers and delicate acoustic tunes, while grunge fans shouldn’t miss Sic Tic and Dances can bring something a little poppier to the table. Sunday 7pm
2) Destroyer, Mega Bog at Brooklyn Steel
In case you missed the heads up we gave a couple of weeks ago about this show, Dan Bejar’s Destroyer, who released one of our favourite records of 2017 released one of our (Ken), rolls into town on Saturday at Brooklyn Steel. I have to say, the venue has been a great addition to the borough and one can only hope we never have to trek out to Terminal 5 ever again. Whatever you do, don’t miss the jazz/pop/rock of openers Mega Bog, who themselves released a wonderful record last year with Happy Together. Saturday 7pm
1) The Posies at City Winery
As we told you last week, power-pop greats The Posies are on an acoustic duo tour to celebrate their 30th anniversary. Since that’s how the band (Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer) started, seeing them in this format is more than fitting for the anniversary. You can expect to hear their classic songs as well as deep cuts, maybe even a Big Star cover or two (Stringfellow and Auer were members of the reformed band with Alex Chilton and Jody Stephens in the 90s and early 00s). As part of the 30 year celebration, the band are also re-releasing their classic 90s albums, Dear 23, Frosting on the Beater & Amazing Disgrace, via a pledge music campaign so don’t miss out on those. At the time of writing there are very few seats left for this one. Thursday 8pm
