Police Search For Suspect in Apparent Racially Motivated Attack on Suffolk Street

Police are looking for a suspect who went on a racist rant early Monday morning and viciously attacked a Lower East Side resident.

It happened at around 2 a.m. near Broome and Suffolk streets. A 37-year-old man was slashed on the arm, leg, thigh and chest. The suspect also punched his victim in the chest and stole his iPhone. Police say the suspect shouted at the man, “F*****g Mexican. If you call the police I will kill you.” He also reportedly told him, “get out of my country.”

The Daily News spoke with the victim, the father of two young girls, the other day:

Tomas Jaimez, who had just finished a long restaurant shift, stopped at a pharmacy to buy eye drops. He was a half-block from his home at Suffolk St. and Broome St. at 2:05 a.m. Monday when the attacker blocked his path. “I haven’t been able to sleep. He attacked me because of my race,” (said Jaimez)… “I fell to the ground and almost passed out. I couldn’t breathe… When I was getting up I noticed he had a knife in his hand. He was trying to cut my face, but I raised my arms to try to stop him.”

Jaimez was taken to Beth Israel for treatment. Police say the suspect is a 40 to 45 years old man, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds and he was wearing a black North Face coat.
