Under the Radar Festival 2020 Kicks Off on January 8th
Under The Radar theater festival at The Public opens its 16th season on Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020. The international line-up confirms the downtown festival’s reputation as a premier launching pad for new and cutting-edge performance by emerging artists. They write:
UTR 2020 will feature exciting new work by innovative artists Laurie Anderson and Hsin-Chien Huang; Back to Back Theatre; Josh Fox; Aleshea Harris and The Movement Theatre Company; Makuyeika Colectivo Teatral and Héctor Flores Komatsu; Ahamefule J. Oluo; Teatro y Su Doble, Aline Kuppenheim, and Guillermo Calderón; Selina Thompson; and Amir Nizar Zuabi. The festival will also include works by Nick Payne, Wang Chong, and Théâtre du Rêve Expérimental; Touretteshero andBattersea Arts Centre; and Suguru Yamamoto at partner venues throughout New York City.
Under the Radar + Joe’s Pub: In Concert returns this year with performances by Ryan J. Haddad, Lucy McCormick, Rizo, and Daniel J. Watts.The line-up for the Devised Theater Working Group’s INCOMING! Series includes All My Relations Collective; Shayok Misha Chowdhury and Kameron Neal; nicHi douglas; The HawtPlates; Maiko Kikuchi; and Piehole.
The Library and the mezzanine will also be open for Under the Radar: Late Night.
The festival runs Jan. 8-19 at the Public and other venues downtown. Among the highlights are “To the Moon,” an immersive piece by the musician, writer and performance artist Laurie Anderson and the artist Hsin-Chien Huang that gives viewers a virtual trip to the moon, and “Grey Rock,” a play from the writer-director Amir Nizar Zuabi about a Palestinian man who decides to build a rocket in his shed, with the goal of reaching the moon.
Under The Radar was founded in 2005 by Mark Russell, former Artistic Director of P.S. 122.
